Communicating in Relationships

A strong, healthy relationship can be one of the best supports in your life. Good relationships improve all aspects of your life, strengthening your health, your mind and your connections with others.

Communication is important in relationships with partner, children and other family members and friends. It allows us to share interests, aspirations and concerns, to support each other, to organize our lives and make decisions. Talk to each other no matter how well you know and love each other, you cannot read your partner's mind. We need to communicate clearly to avoid misunderstandings that may cause hurt, anger or confusion.

Honest direct communication is a key part of any relationship. When both parties feel comfortable expressing their needs, fears and desires. Trust and bonds are strengthened.

Non-verbal communication such as body language e.g. eye contact, leaning forward or away or touching someone's arm are critical to communication. When we communicate, we can say a lot without speaking. Our body posture, tone of voice and expressions on our face all convey a message. if our feelings don’t fit with our words, it is often the non-verbal communication that gets 'heard' and believed.

Listening is a very important part of effective communication. A good listener can encourage their partner to talk openly and honestly.
